Trade Measurements

Weights and measures laws have protected the interests of consumers and traders in South Australia since 1843. The Trade Measurement Act 1993 and the regulations under that Act apply to all measurements (whether using shop scales, petrol pumps or other equipment) made for any trading purpose, such as determining a sale price or calculating a freight charge.

Trade measurement officers in the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs are directly responsible for monitoring and enforcing this legislation and other closely related legislation as part of their day to day activities. Everyone is a beneficiary of good trade measurement practice. Purchasers benefit from receiving the goods that they have ordered and paid for, traders benefit by avoiding unwanted losses of product and South Australia can have confidence in a system which delivers consistency and reliability in the market place.
