Recent Initiatives

In addition to the formation of the Veterans' Affairs portfolio and the appointment of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, the following recent initiatives have been undertaken by the State Government of South Australia:

  • Amending legislation to legalise fundraising Members Draws held in RSL’s and clubs
  • Taking action to protect the acronym RSL from misuse.
  • Part purchasing the VC awarded to Major Peter Badcoe  and arranging a state tour of the medal and other memorabilia
  • Naming of Diver Derrick Bridge
  • Part funding of Vietnam Veterans’ Day
  • Establishment of Veterans Health Advisory Council
  • Part Funding Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander War Memorial
  • Funding of Army Museum of South Australia for Koala Exhibit and Len Opie DCM, ED, RFD Display
  • Creation of a Veterans’ Advisory Council
Past  initiatives:
  • Upgrade of Torrens Parade Ground
  • Preservation of graves and memorials of war veterans in Centennial Park’s Derrick Gardens and the RSL Walls
  • Majority funding for the construction of the  Vietnam War Memorial.
  • Introduction of the Premier’s ANZAC Prize to give young South Australians the opportunity to visit battlefields and graves, and attend services of remembrance for those who lost their lives at war
  • Passed legislation to protect ANZAC Day traditions and establish the ANZAC Day Commemoration Council.
