About the Council
The Veterans’ Advisory Council is the principal means of communication between the veterans’ community and the State Government

Objectives of the Veterans’ Advisory Council
- Promote the wellbeing of all members of the veterans’ community in South Australia.
- Encourage cooperation across all veteran organisations in South Australia.
- Provide a forum for the veterans’ community to communicate directly to the highest levels of State Government through the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs (the Minister).
- Monitor and provide advice about matters relating to the recognition and commemoration of the service of veterans.
Functions of the Veterans’ Advisory Council
- Ensure the objectives of the Veterans’ Advisory Council are met to the maximum extent practicable.
- Provide advice at a strategic and policy level to the State Government on behalf of the veterans’ community.
- Provide advice on issues relating to the ageing, health, welfare, and disability of veterans and their dependants, including advice on identification and support of isolated veterans and dependants.
- Investigate matters referred to the Council by the Minister for response on behalf of the veterans’ community.
- Consult with the ex-service community when developing advice for the Minister.
- Provide advice to the community on behalf of the Minister on veterans related programmes, projects and funding opportunities.
- About matters of a Commonwealth nature, the Council may request that any recommendation of the Council be passed through the Minister before being presented to the Commonwealth.
- Liaise with the Prime Ministerial Advisory Council on Ex-Service matters in order to expand the understanding of veterans’ matters.
Appointments
It is intended that the Council will be headed by an independent Chair and other members will be drawn from the South Australian veterans’ community.
Members of the Council will be appointed by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.
Term of appointment
It is intended that the inaugurating Council will be appointed before December 2008.
Initial term of appointment will be for 12 months. At the expiration of that term of appointment, a member may be eligible for re-appointment for a further two years.
Meetings
The Council will meet no less than eight times per calendar year.
The Council may establish sub-committees and call expert evidence as required to assist in its deliberations.
The Council may in the performance of its functions be assisted by employees in the South Australian Government who are assigned by the Minister.
V.A.C. Meeting Dates for 2010
The inaugural members of the V.A.C. have been re-appointed by Minister Atkinson for a further 12 month term commencing on 1 January, 2010.

Remuneration
Sitting fees will be paid to members of the Council on a sessional (per half day) basis at a rate to be determined by the Minister after consultation with the Chief Executive, Department of the Premier and Cabinet, who has responsibility for recommending government board fees. Board fees will be paid in accordance with DPC Circular 16, which may be found at www.premcab.sa.gov.au
