The establishment of a Commissioner for Children and Young People is now underway, after Parliament passed the enabling legislation.
The Commissioner will have powers equivalent to a royal commission to investigate the rights, development and wellbeing of children at a systemic level. The Commissioner’s office will also have discretion to investigate individual cases where it believes a systemic issue is involved.
The law is in line with recommendations made by the Child Protection Systems Royal Commission.
