Film bullies to face prison

9 March 2013

New laws that make the filming or distribution of humiliating or degrading images a criminal offence have passed the State’s Parliament.

The Government’s Summary Offences (Filming Offences) Amendment Bill 2012 is a response to a new digital age of cyber crime.

The laws include offences for people who distribute videos or images to exploit or humiliate a person, and were agreed to by cross-benchers in the Legislative Council on Thursday.

They also cover the filming or distribution of lewd or explicit material without the person’s consent.

The new offences will carry up to two years imprisonment.
