OPI takes over police complaints role

4 September 2017

From 4 September 2017, the Office of the Police Ombudsman will close and the responsibility for the complaints against the police will transfer to the Office for Public Integrity.

Other main functions of the Police Ombudsman, including external review of Freedom of Information Applications, have already transferred to the Ombudsman SA

This will have no effect on any complaint made between now and the date of the transfer. Complaints not finalised by the Office of the Police Ombudsman will automatically transfer to the Office of Public Integrity.

In December 2016, Parliament passed the Police Complaints and Discipline Bill 2016, which saw the approval of Police Complaints and Discipline Act 2016 and the repeal of the Police (Complaints and Disciplinary Proceedings) Act 1985.
