The Attorney-General’s Department, Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation (AAR) is undertaking a cultural mapping project to better understand Aboriginal heritage and cultural values associated with Kurlta Kauwangga (Mount Terrible). Kurlta Kauwangga is the highest point in the Sellicks Hill Range, overlooking the Willunga Basin to the north and the Hindmarsh Tiers to the south, some 50 km south of Adelaide.

Historical records and traditional Aboriginal knowledge indicate that the Sellicks Hill Range near Kurlta Kauwangga was a major Aboriginal travelling and trading route, connecting the southern Adelaide region to the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Kaurna, Peramangk, Ngarrindjeri and Ramindjeri Peoples may have an interest in this project.

About the project

The study area for this project is currently a 25 km radius around Kurlta Kauwangga; however, this may change depending on feedback from Traditional Owners and other interested Aboriginal people.

AAR seeks to speak to and work with Aboriginal people who have traditional, historical and/or heritage interests in the study area.

Pending feedback from Traditional Owners, initial activities proposed for this cultural mapping project could include:

  • revisiting and re-recording known Aboriginal heritage sites
  • visiting and recording previously unrecorded Aboriginal heritage sites
  • identifying areas for further archaeological, historical or cultural/anthropological assessments.

You may also wish to complete this questionnaire (PDF, 177.0 KB) and return it to AAR. This will help AAR to identify interested parties and facilitate conversations to progress the project.
