The South Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation Network (SAACCON) was established in June 2019 to lead engagement with the Aboriginal community about the Closing the Gap refresh.

In line with arrangements in other jurisdictions, SAACCON, as a member of the Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peak Organisations (Coalition of Peaks), provides advice and recommendations to the Coalition of Peaks to ensure the views of South Australian Aboriginal community controlled organisations are heard in the development and implementation of the updated Closing the Gap framework.

During negotiation of the new National Agreement on Closing the Gap, SAACCON consulted with Aboriginal South Australians, focussing on the proposed targets and reform priorities for the new Closing the Gap framework.

Following finalisation of the new National Agreement on Closing the Gap in July 2020, SAACCON has worked in partnership with Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation (AAR) during development of South Australia’s first implementation plan for Closing the Gap, which was launched on Monday 9 August 2021.

SAACCON and AAR will continue to work together as South Australia’s Implementation Plan for Closing the Gap is put into action, and to ensure the crucial monitoring and reporting requirements are met.

Our department provides financial and other support to SAACCON to build capacity and grow their membership, which currently includes approximately 17 Aboriginal community controlled organisations from a range of sectors.
