Children and young people have a right to feel safe and be protected from harm.
The Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) has a Child Safe Environments Policy (PDF, 1.3 MB) in place to ensure that a commitment to protect and support children and young people is embedded in AGD’s culture.
The Child Safe Environments policy is in alignment with the following legislation and documentation:

- Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 (external site) (PDF) (external site) (PDF)
- National Principles for Child Safe Organisations (external site) (PDF) (external site) (PDF).
The policy sets out specific requirements around:
- employee conduct, including how staff should respond and report incidents of harm, or suspected harm, to a child or young person
- recruitment and criminal history checks
- training, supervision and support for employees including specific requirements for staff who work directly with or around children
- mandated reporters, as prescribed by section 30(3) of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 (external site) (PDF) (external site) (PDF).
The policy is tailored to reflect AGD’s operational environment and activities and establishes AGD’s expectations of employees to provide a safe environment for children.
